Finally that ultimate asshat Leo is dead and I am only sorry he did not suffer longer. Of course FH leaves a possibility that that slime sludge crawler supreme might come back, Jane should really go burn his grave to ash to prevent that.

As for Jane, well she has more drama as usual and I am still pissed she ended up with Bruiser - it is the modern day equivalent of marrying your rapist and I don't care how much he supposedly loves her, his prior betrayals and his probable future betrayals aren't enough to make me want to root for them.

The big cliffhanger Jane is dying of cancer but has a shot to fix herself if she can do it. Honestly, I think the big glorious death like the end of that old western Shane would be a great way to draw a line under this one.

Apr 04, Pam Blome rated it it was amazing. This book left me stunned and amazed. This was written as a finale of sorts and tied up the story lines.

Jane has a long, complicated history and a man, skinwalker shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her long lost brother, and that's just one of the many plot twists that starts this thrill ride.

Jane has been a loner, but has now acquired a "family" around her, which she feels compelled to protect however she can. All of this leads up to this final thrilling duel.

Some long known characters get killed, others rise to new heights. Highly recommended, but start at the beginning of the series! Christian Grey rated it really liked it Shelves: audio.

Well, it was a good story. The author tried to take unpredictable twist, but the avid reader in me saw them coming especially the end. So that I don't spoil it, if you've read, if it's true, I may end my journey with Jane Yellowrock.

Let me just say I don't like Jane much. Tell me how poor Rick is the villain in most readers eyes. He flirted with women in the name of duty for his job.

How is that different than Bruiser holding Jane down as Leo took her blood without her permission those many book Well, it was a good story. How is that different than Bruiser holding Jane down as Leo took her blood without her permission those many book ago.

Both had a choice. Both acted dishonorable towards her. But everyone forgives Bruiser for helping in what can be termed "rape" though not sexual.

He help force her to have something taken from her against her will. Somehow that is less evil than Rick flirting with woman for information in the line of duty.

Sorry, I don't forgive Bruiser. I would prefer Jane not date anyone or find someone else. It claws my through every time she speaks of sweet things about Bruiser and thinks bad things about Rick.

What does this say about our society. And Jane, Miss Holy-er than Thou, can forgive one man and not the other is so hypocritical. She's almost as bad as Anita Blake with her self righteousness wrapped in sin.

I love the Anita books btw, but a spade is a spade. So I listen and wish good things for Rick in the future. Maybe in the other series.

I don't want him to be that other girl's person. And funny enough, I don't want Rick to be in love with anyone else but Jane.

So there's that. Back to this. It was a good story, but a little too predictable in it's unpredictability.

But overall good. May 01, Mindy Mymudes rated it it was amazing. This was a fantastic rollercoaster ride that jerked my head around so often with it twisty turns I didn't want it to stop.

May 03, Monadh rated it it was amazing Shelves: vampires , uf , new-orleans. You gotta love Leo This is one of my absolute favorite UF series and not in small part because of Leo.

The main difference between UF and PNR was once described as the focus of the story not being the romantic relationship between the two main protagonists and the plot functioning even in the absence of that relationship.

His machinations, his long-term plans, his schemes within schemes are what, almost exclusively, have driven the story-arc of the series.

He is the one who questions Jane, exasperates Jane, drives her to distraction and challenges her. But despite being a very old and powerful vampire he is also honorable, a good leader and has hidden depths which gave me quite a nerd-girl moment , all redeeming qualities that make him the perfect anti-hero.

At the beginning, when we first meet him, he is certainly in danger of losing the last threads of his humanity, but Jane changes him as he changes her.

It seems most everything that Leo has contrived has been done to not only protect the vampires in his clan, but also all the other paranormals in America that would be impacted if the Eurovamps were to win and take over.

And sneaky guy that he is, he also finally succeeds in binding Jane to him, not by force but by baring himself to her.

Although I loved the book overall — it is exciting, fast-paced, action-packed, emotionally wrenching — I had a bit of trouble with the ending.

It has been pointed out in previous reviews that this was supposed to be the end of the series and the book had been all but written when the decision was made to add two more books.

The final battle with the Eurovamps is the culmination of the story arc of the last several books and you can see where the ending was supposed to go almost like a Shakespearean tragedy — battle won, order restored, main protagonists dead.

Instead of closure the ending is suspended, like the drops of possible futures Jane sees when she steps outside of time.

View all 3 comments. What a ride. I admit I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book immediately as I had heard it had a cliffhanger. But when I found it in a bookstore I couldn't avoid buying it :.

Glad I did and even more glad I read it. But as I said what a ride. I see a the weak points that annoyed my friends, but at the end I was still swept away by the story.

To be honest I can actually see the story ending he What a ride. To be honest I can actually see the story ending here. To me this isn't a cliffhanger, but an open one that leaves to the readers' imagination the future of characters so loved.

Post script note. When exactly Europeans have become the untrustworthy enemy in the eyes of America? This is he second series I know of that cast European Vamps as the enemy, depicted as land grabbing, cheating, lying..

And this musings bring me back to the point: it's all very black and white. US so pure is laughing, but mostly lacks nuance, subtlety. How much better when there's grey?

May 03, Pauline rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , fantasy , urbanfantasy. I will admit at the outset that I have read and enjoyed every Jane Yellowrock book that's been published so I began reading Dark Queen with a bit of preferential bias, but what happened as I read that book was magical.

Faith Hunter has a proven knack for immersing the reader in the Yellowrock world, so a sense of "being there" is one of her great strengths as a writer.

Dark Queen started out to be the final book of the Yellowrock series but that changed while it was being written, making things I will admit at the outset that I have read and enjoyed every Jane Yellowrock book that's been published so I began reading Dark Queen with a bit of preferential bias, but what happened as I read that book was magical.

Dark Queen started out to be the final book of the Yellowrock series but that changed while it was being written, making things in the story go all over this particular world as she tied up some loose ends.

For me personally, this book is the deepest, most entrancingly told story I've read in a very long time. Jane goes from the mundane making of arrangements for a major duel between the two biggest, baddest vamps in the world which she and her team have been doing in the background the last couple of books to uniting more deeply with the puma soul who is bound within her, and facing her own deepest set of fears - and comes out OK with them in an unbelievably realistic sense of calm and acceptance.

Jane's life story takes some tremendously wild turns in this book, and her use of time manipulation increases, bringing consequences of their own to her.

She and Bruiser become closer as does her relationship with Molly. The good news is that many of the people who were "baddies" get such well-deserved desserts.

How satisfying!!! The way the tale is told and the epilogue seem to affect each of the readers differently, but for me, it was just right and left a lot of room for hope in the next book to come.

I recommend it highly. Apr 02, Minx rated it it was amazing Shelves: urban-fantasy , read-in , fantasy , paranormal. I was beyond excited to get my hands on an early reviewer copy of the Dark Queen!

I have definitely become a fan of Jane Yellowrock and after the last book, Cold Reign, I was on pins and needles to see where this newest installment would take the story.

Dark Queen is the twelfth book, and was supposed to be the last book, in the Jane Yellowrock series but thankfully that is no longer the case.

With that said, Dark Queen is an amazing book that brings together a lot of the previous open threads a I was beyond excited to get my hands on an early reviewer copy of the Dark Queen!

With that said, Dark Queen is an amazing book that brings together a lot of the previous open threads and sub plots and should not be read as a standalone.

At the very least you should read the previous book, Cold Reign, prior to this book but really starting with book one, Skinwalker, would be best.

It has finally happened! We all know that it was coming but in Dark Queen the winner takes all showdown between the New Orleans vamps and the European vamps will finally come to fruition.

There is a crazy amount of action taking place right from the start! Jane encounters fire after fire throughout this story.

Some of them are personal and some of them are related to her position as Enforcer for the Master of the City. She is more distracted and not quite on top of things as usual, which I actually liked because that seems more realistic to me.

Jane is a strong character but there is only so much a person can handle at one time and I found it to be a refreshing change.

Another refreshing change that occurred in this story was that Beast had a much larger part than usual and I loved it. The relationship between Jane and Beast has changed over the series and this book truly illustrates the place that they have come to where they are more akin to having a relationship rather than struggling for dominance over one another.

Beast cracked me up and the dialogue between Jane and her is always enjoyable. I liked it very much but at the same time it was just unsettling, ha ha ha.

There are a lot of twists and turns that occur throughout reading Dark Queen but everything truly is about the Sangre Duello.

The blood battle itself was truly fascinating and I loved the buildup leading to it. The action that takes place during these battles was pretty intense and there is some creative play with the rules and dynamics of the battle that are both frustrating but at the same time comical.

I will say that the ending was quite shocking! All the subplots, open threads, and the main plot were coming together for the finale and then the story took an unexpected turn and now there is a surprising twist that has me all worried and yet excited.

I am hoping beyond hope that something wonderful occurs in the next serial because I was quite saddened with where things were going with Jane.

Overall, the Dark Queen is a bold, astonishing, and riveting page turner and I highly recommend this book and series to all readers!

This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.

What an amazing series this has been. I am officially in mourning at having finished the last book so far , which has also been the best. Now the wait for Faith Hunter to do her magic and write the next part of Jane Yellowrock's saga!

This series is every bit as good the 2nd time through. Thank you, Faith Hunter. I love the world of Jane Yellowrock.

Apr 07, Diane Lynch rated it it was amazing. Leo, the vampire Master of the City of New Orleans, is preparing for his blood challenge by the emperor on the European vampires.

To top it off, she has some family drama to deal with. I enjoyed the characters. They are diverse and have a lot of depth.

I love that she began remembering things from her life past. I enjoyed the addition of Ayatas FireWind. There were twists and a lot of action in the story.

The rules and dynamics between the combatants were well developed and exciting. Leo did some surprising things throughout the story.

I loved the epilogue. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. I don't think I'd say the ending is a cliff hanger, but it is certainly the end of an era and the harbinger of big changes - of which a major one is unresolved.

But I laughed out loud often, I teared up a bit in a spot or two, and I ended the book glad to have read it but wishing the ending were more resolved instead of next-book set-up.

Usually I down grade for that sort of thing, but this time I think it all flowed fairly well. May 01, Matilde Damkier rated it liked it Shelves: genre-urban-fantasy.

I have to admit, this book left me a bit shell-shocked. I mean, where do we even go from here? Is this the last book? The ending was ambiguous enough that I couldn't say for sure.

Spoiler alert: view spoiler [So Leo is dead. Until it happened I hadn't actually realized that he was a necessary character in the series for me.

Now that he is no longer in play, I find myself oddly unconcerned with whether or not there'll be more books.

Without Leo's Machiavellian schemes I have no desire to read o I have to admit, this book left me a bit shell-shocked. Without Leo's Machiavellian schemes I have no desire to read on.

I might be completely delusional, but I'm holding on to the small glimmer of hope, that when Jane tried to call Leo after he failed to wake from the blood at the first full moon , he didn't answer promptly, but she did wake him.

And the next book will be him storming to her side as her new blood-bound primo, or something like that. I know; it's ridiculously far-fetched, but it's the only thing this series can give me now, that I'd give a damn about.

Driven only by a unquenchable lust for power, the Queen believes it is her rightful place to rule not only the galaxy, but the entire universe as well, and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals, the only things standing in her way being the Terran Corporate's army and the Battletoads.

She is as equally evil and powerful as she is beautiful, and many a men have fallen victim to their combined effects.

The Dark Queen is almost always depicted as a young woman with jet black hair, a voluptuous body clad in a dominatrix-style skimpy and tight black bathing suit with high boots.

In the reboot she was completely redesigned, keeping the voluminous hair, large hips, gloves and boots but losing most of her sex appeal, now being clad in a purple jumpsuit.

Throughout the games there have been several inconsistencies regarding her actual size. Even though her height is stated to be six-feet tall on her profile screen in the arcade game which would mean she is actually smaller than the Battletoads , she normally appears to be of a tremendous size in the classic games, usually roughly four times the height of the Battletoads.

In Battletoads , the Dark Queen only has one special move: spinning until she turns into a tornado. How much damage is done to the player is based on how fast she is spinning; if she is about to turn into a tornado, minor damage is done, major damage will be done if she is completely spinning.

If you happen to get close to her and don't use any moves, she will use her leg to kick you. The Dark Queen usually appears between stages to mock and taunt the Battletoads, but she also possesses powerful magical abilities to fight back with.

In the first game, her primary attack consists of turning into a tornado and attempting to hit the player.
